Temporary work of art

Place du Vieux Marché
FROM 11th JULY TO 4th OCTOBER 2020

The first encounter between Le Havre and Stephan Balkenhol occurred during the 2019 edition of Un Été Au Havre. As he discovered the architecture of the city reconstructed by Auguste Perret, the artist had fun « housing » new inhabitants on the facades of several buildings.

For Un Été Au Havre 2020, Stephan Balkenhol has added a new « specimen » to his gallery of characters : Monsieur Goéland*. This gull-headed man stands on a hybrid support, which looks both like a perch and like a mast and its yard. Wearing a pea coat – an iconic jacket usually worn by seamen, sailors, fishermen, and pirates, Monsieur Goéland* has settled just outside the Museum of Natural History. Surrounded by buildings, he stretches towards the sky, probably trying to look out to the sea. This 2.80-metre high monumental sculpture made of painted bronze is placed on a 3.20-metre high perch.
