Pacifique - Edgar Sarin

Pacifique is a patinated bronze sculpture built by repeating an amphora form that stacks six times on itself to reach a height of over 10 metres. In ancient times, the amphora was the “standard” object used to transport goods on trading routes. Hundreds of them were loaded onto ships sailing around the Mediterranean, carrying wine, olive oil and other basic products: the amphora was indeed the ancient container... Edgar Sarin wanted to imagine this form surviving in Le Havre, a reminder erected as a landmark in space and time. These repeated amphorae are on the same scale as the contemporary containers that can be seen on the other side of the dock. They become part of the visual lexicon of ship masts, cranes and signal lights that are commonplace in the port.
